Congratulations to SJSU’s own Dustin Mulvaney, professor of environmental studies, who will be part of SJSU’s contribution to the California Solar Canal Initiative (CSCI), an innovative public-private partnership tackling the problem of renewable energy by installing solar panels over water canals to reduce evaporation and generate clean energy.

“SJSU’s involvement in the project shows that our students and faculty are quickly becoming leaders in promoting the sustainability of energy and water systems to integrated sectors that are crucial to addressing climate change and human prosperity in California,” says Mulvaney, who initially wrote about solar canals as a “win-win” techno-ecological synergy in a paper in Nature Sustainability” in 2019.

“Photography is about recording the past because you want someone in the future to remember it,” says SJSU Associate Professor of Photography Binh Danh, ’02 BFA Photography. “But for me, it’s also about the present moment, especially when you see yourself reflected back in a picture. As a result of the interesting negotiation between time and space within the photographic medium, you’re also projecting into the future.”

“I always wanted to explore space,” says Cesar Meza, a Skyline College student who transferred to SJSU in fall 2024. “I always wanted to see if there's life beyond Earth.”

So when he got the opportunity to apply for NASA’s ASPIRE internship program, which pairs students with NASA mentors for exo- and astrobiology projects, he thought, “I'll chuck my hat in the ring and see what happens.”

He loved his experience – for more on Meza’s adventures, as well as other SJSU students’ experiences with ASPIRE, check out the latest issue of #SJSUWSQ.

In honor of Women’s History Month, the SJSU NewsCenter asked a number of women leaders across campus to reflect on the role of mentorship in their lives. Among them: Diana Victa, ’10 Sociology, manager of the César Chávez Community Action Center.

“As a mentee, I’ve been fortunate to have mentors who saw potential in me before I fully recognized it in myself,” she says. “Their guidance has shaped how I navigate my identities as a first-generation Filipina from a working-class family in higher education, leadership and community work. They’ve challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, affirmed me, helped me make sense of my experiences and inspired me to use my voice to advocate for myself and others.”

Spartans, we want to know: What makes a good mentor? Shout out someone you admire in the comments! #WomensHistoryMonth #WHM
